John Mayer has sang song from Blues-Rock to Adult Contemporary to Pop and now is trying his hand at Country. His song “In the Blood” off his new album The Search For Everything, is performed like a song straight out of Nashville and sounds that way to. In the song, dominated by guitar and a heavy rhythm section, is a darker song about Mayer finding himself and wondering how much like his parents he will become. The song is all about family and contains all aspects in the lyrics saying “How much of my mother has my mother left in me”, “How much of my father am I destined to become” and “How much like my brothers do my brothers want to be // does a broken home become another broken family”. The song has started to get okay across country radio recently and has been well received by critics. This crossover shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise though, switch some instruments in most John Mayer songs and they start sounding pretty county. This is also a wake up call to other country artists as Mayers shows how to make a country hit without talking about lifted pick-up trucks and cut off jeans.
