North Korea’s missile test yesterday failed to take off… literally. The regime was set to launch and show off its latest missile yesterday but the missile failed and exploded almost immediately according to South Korean media outlets.
This attempt comes after the country’s biggest holiday, the day of sun, which was celebrated by a massive military parade in the capital. Tensions have been sky high with the US moving a nuclear capable aircraft carrier strike group to the region. China has stepped in and tried to de-escalate the situation but has taken a different approach than usual. Thanks to the hardball diplomacy and shows off force by the Trump administration China has threatened to cut off vital oil shipments to North Korea if escalation continues instead of their usual anti-American rhetoric. There has also been speculation that US cyber attacks on North Korea may have caused the failure as well as the one from last week. The attacks were started by the Obama administration and have been continued by Trump but it is unclear whether the attacks had anything to do with the failures.
An U.S official stated that their would be no reaction from the Trump since the launch was a such a failure. The official also added however that a nuclear test would have been far more provocative. “If it had of been a nuclear test then other actions would have been taken from the U.S.,” the official said, without elaborating on how the U.S. might respond.
